Recreation Therapy / ELDER LIFE SPECIALIST
Overlook Medical Center is actively recruiting four, grant funded positions:
• 20 hours per week – flexible schedule
• Salary $25K
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Therapeutic Recreation
• Must be certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification
• At least 3 years working in Therapeutic Recreation, preferably in a healthcare setting and/ or with a geriatric population
• Requires strong interpersonal and communication skills
Primary Function: incorporate delirium prevention techniques in the care of elderly patients at Overlook Medical Center. The ELS will oversee the daily operations of the delirium program, including collaborating with other health care professionals to design appropriate and individualized interventions for each patient age 70 or over.
The ELS will orient patients and families to the program and assist in implementing appropriate volunteer assignment. They will share responsibility for visiting patients and providing therapeutic activities and meal assistance. They will be instrumental in assuring mobilization to prevent functional decline. The ELS will assist the delirium team in training volunteers and educating staff and the community on the Overlook geriatric delirium program.
Principal responsibilities and duties:
• Assist staff in the development and implementation of individualized therapeutic intervention plans incorporating the delirium prevention protocol.
• Collaborate with other staff regarding patient progress and update the plan as needed.
• Assist staff in prompt identification of delirium and implementation of appropriate management interventions
• Collaborate with other staff in providing appropriate behavior management techniques for patients with dementia
• Monitor adherence to the protocol and record outcome variables.
• Establish and address reasons for non-adherence and implement changes to improve services
• Assist in training and supporting volunteers. Assist in coordinating the volunteer program, including schedules to provide optimal patient coverage
• Assign patient-appropriate activities to the volunteers and perform activities when volunteers are not available.
• Purchase and secure program equipment. Maintain tracking records of all equipment
• Educate staff and community as needed on appropriate care to elderly patients in the hospital, including delirium prevention, identification, and management
